Police Director Carl Riley assumed the role on October 1, 2026. He previously served as Police Director for the City of Plainfield. His law enforcement career began in 1990 with the Shrewsbury Police Department. After four years, he transitioned to investigations, serving on multi-agency narcotics task forces across Essex and Union counties. Director Riley later advanced through the ranks of Detective, Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain at the Union County Prosecutor’s Office, where he led major crime units and joint task forces. Director Riley is an alumnus of the FBI National Academy (230th Session) and executive police programs at Penn State and the University of Louisville.
